All guidance necessary for this submission will be given to you in workshop 8. You will be reminded of some key elements of your learning during ULMS550 and other modules. You will also be given the opportunity to start (or continue) creating your own metaphor and be shown some exemplary designs. It is important that you read the brief and that you are prepared in advance of this session in order to fully benefit from it. This is a compulsory session and a register of attendance will be taken.
- Submit all four activities below within 1 document, which equates to maximum 1500 words.
- This is a dual submission; please submit one copy at the Student Support Office and one copy via Turnitin.
Activity 1. Report (maximum 500 words)
Write an evidence-based theorised critical evaluation report of the contribution of reflective portfolios as a learning and reflexive tool to develop a professional (use the HRM practitioner for this work, although this should be similar for other professions such as doctors, nurses, solicitors etc). This report must present the theoretical and learning contribution, so must be well researched and include your own definition of reflective portfolios drawn from academic sources.
Guidance:- Over the period of time the module has been running we have systematically utilised the below symbol of a ‘house’ to develop your academic transition to develop HRM knowledge. Focus on your own personal transition from your UG studies of analysis to your PG studies requiring critical analysis and critical reflection.
Activity 2. Metaphor (counted as 250 words equivalent)
Create an illustrated VISUAL metaphor to depict both your professional and personal journey.
Guidance: – The use of metaphor helps develop insights and sense making to induce deeper reflection. Please ensure you understand what a metaphor is and why they are used prior to you starting this task.
Here are some websites to begin your search about metaphor creation. A bibliography will be necessary of your research and this bibliography is not included in your wordcount.

Activity 3. Critical Reflection (500 words)
Write a 500 word critical reflection about your own academic and professional transition during your M.Sc. HRM programme. You must embed your metaphor here (activity 2) and refer to it as a resource to develop your insights and understanding of self.
Guidance: – You must refer this activity to the visual metaphor you have developed for activity 2.
Draw upon actual aspects (give examples) of your learning, consider your learning journey since you began your M.Sc. HRM program at The University of Liverpool. Consider the following to help you create your critical reflection:
- Your own academic transition during the year – developing critical analysis (remember Nonaka and Justified true belief); were there any key moments of change? And why do you think they impacted upon you?
- Peer assisted learning – what have you learned from being in a PAL? What has been challenging for you?
- Cross-cultural working, difference and diversity – opportunities and challenges?
- Key aspects of your learning which resonated with you, such as external speakers, MBA talks, CIPD events, reading certain books or articles, reflective diaries, presentations, lectures and seminars. What particularly resonated with you and impact upon you? Why do you think that this as the case?
- What have you missed and why (such as lectures, seminars, external speakers, CIPD events or reading materials)? With hindsight, what do you wish you had done more of and less of this academic year?
- Your professional HR journey. To what extent have you experienced a professional transition, both individually and as a team member? How have critical reflection and your portfolio contributed to this?
- CIPD – Professional map – how has your own understanding of HR developed? What were the significant modules for you personally and why? What have you found difficult and why?
The word count will EXCLUDE headings, diagrams, pictures, figures and references and words on the visual metaphor itself.
Activity 4. PDP report and cost plan (approximately 250 words)
PDP – Using activity 1-3 as tools for reflection on your own developmental journey to date. Consider your ongoing personal (character) and professional development needs over the next two years. Use the CIPD template in the link below as the format for your 2-year PDP report. Ensure that your PDP is a fully-costed plan and justify your expenditure decisions. Consider both personal (character) and professional development (including HR networking in the area you will live in), with specific details for each quarter (such as proposed training providers). There should therefore be at least 8 entries (one for each 3 month period in the 2 years). The cost schedule will not count in your wordcount.

Guidance:-
- In which professional areas do you need to gain more skills? Rationalise this please.
- What personal attributes do you want to develop further (how will you strengthen your weaknesses and further enhance your strengths)?
- How will you do this? Think of the varied ways you can approach your development. Some will cost nothing (such as a mentor at work) and others will cost money.
- Consider where you may work geographically and investigate what opportunities are available in that location. For example, you may wish to join your local CIPD branch events or annual conference if in the UK, you may wish to attend specific training courses in your chosen vicinity, you may want to have a coach or mentor, you may want to do work-shadowing, read books, do some e-learning, attend an international HR conference or join a local HR network.
