1 Assessment Scheme:
This coursework requires around 2500 words (inclusive). This work is expected to be
in an essay style and has to be completed individually.
2 The Topic of the Coursework:
Analysis of Motives and Prospects within the OLI framework: a Case Study of German
FDI in China
(The detailed case/background information are provided and attached with this file)
3 Requirements:
1) The coursework must be your own work and in your own words. Avoid plagiarism
and copying from a colleague. When utilising books and journal articles, you must
make sure that you reference the authors correctly. Failure to do this will be
penalised. Students are advised to note the University’s regulations in section F of
the University courses handbook, on ‘The infringement of University Regulations’, as
these regulations will be enforced.
2) The coursework must follow academic convention and style (you can refer to
Harvard Referencing, appropriate in-text citations etc.) The assessment board will
objectively reward those students who at least try to follow the rules and penalise
those that do not.
3) The coursework is required to be submitted in both hardcopy (via the Unihelp
desk) and electronic –copy (via Turnitin) simultaneously.
4) The coursework must be word-processed, 1.5 spaced, and printed on one side of
A4 paper and held together by a single staple – avoid using plastic covers or sheets. It
must be handed in with a cover page and the relevant assessment comment sheet
which can be collected from the Unihelp desk.
4 Quality Requirement:
The coursework will be graded with reference to certain criteria, which include:
• an ability to show an understanding of the issues;
• clear demonstration of an understanding of the relevant body of literature;
• an ability to use the correct theoretical and applied materials to make arguments;
• an ability to make linkages with other topics covered in the module i.e. not
answering the question in isolation;
• utilising your research into a logical and coherent answer/conclusion;
• insights provided by your work.
Therefore, a work that receives a distinction will show an appreciation and
understanding of a wide array of literature and use it in an applied manner. It will
cover most important aspects of the issue in a coherent and logical way and have no
significant mistakes.
Merit will show the above characteristics but will fail to cover the important aspects
of the issue have some minor mistakes and will fail to utilise as broad a literature
base.
To gain either of these grades, students will show more than blind regurgitation,
utilising the relevant theories presented in the literature to give a clear precise
answer.
A pass at this level will show an understanding of the issue, but will have omissions
and some errors. It will not use or apply the theories as thoroughly but will still show
that the student can utilise the relevant material to analyse the problems.
A fail will show a misunderstanding of the concepts presented in the module and fail
to provide adequate analysis and discussion of the issue with the relevant theories
from the literature.
Badly structured and poorly written answers will be penalised (refer to next page).
5 A Suggested Structure for the Coursework
The coursework report should be well-structured and well-presented. As required by
the module, the report is expected to be research-based with some academic merits.
The case and some background information attached with this coursework topic
provide you with some essential data for your analysis, you are encouraged to use
those data as effective as possible. However, I strongly suggest you to collect some
additional and updated data to enhance your analysis, (since data collection and data
handling are very important parts of MA/MSc studies), that will give your work extra
credit points. In any circumstances, you should always put your analysis and
discussion in a context of business decision-making.
The following is a suggested structure of your coursework report; You are strongly
recommended to read the following section and expected to follow the suggested
structure below.
1) Cover page (module title, module code, submission date, student name, and word

3) Abstract (no more than 100 words)

II. clearly state the objectives of the research (i.e., what issues to be discussed and
what questions to be answered by this study)
6) Literature review (relevance, and appropriate coverage)
Key words are OLI, motives and prospects. By reviewing the existing literature in the
field, you need to find out that
I. What are the main feature/capacity of OLI framework; and
II. Who have applied OLI framework in analysis of Motives and Prospects of FDI Case
Study.
III. How appropriate of those application in practice.
7) Analysis and discussion
Use information from the cases provided and from your own collection, and apply
OLI framework (method), to analysis the German FDI’s motives and prospects from
three aspects, i.e., Ownership Advantage, Location advantage and Internalization
(not internationalization) advantage
8) Conclusions
Drawn main conclusive points from previous section, i.e., Analysis and Discussion
section.
