Social Impact Project (the “SIP”): This final course project will be a holistic collection of smaller works where students will select one social problem and “attack” it from three different angles by developing an infographic, an advocacy letter to a stakeholder, and a service-learning proposal. Each component of the final project is worth 50 points.
One social problem that stands out to me in Pullman, Washington, is the issue of poverty. Here’s
why it constitutes a significant social problem.
1. Effect on Individuals and Families:
– Poverty affects individuals and families by limiting their access to necessities such as food,
housing, healthcare, and education.
– It can lead to stress, mental health issues, and reduced quality of life.
– Families living in poverty often struggle to provide for their children, impacting the next
generation’s well-being.
2. Negative Outcomes on Society:
– Poverty perpetuates inequality and hinders social mobility. When a significant portion of the
population faces financial hardship, it affects the overall community.
– Crime rates may increase due to desperation and lack of opportunities.
– Health disparities emerge, as those in poverty may have limited access to healthcare and
preventive services.
3. Stakeholders and Moral Entrepreneurs:
– Stakeholders: These include local government agencies, nonprofits, community
organizations, and businesses. They play a crucial role in addressing poverty through policies,
programs, and support services.
– Moral Entrepreneurs: These are individuals or groups advocating for change. They might be
activists, educators, or community leaders who raise awareness about poverty and work toward
solutions.
4. Why I’m Interested:
– According to DATAUSA, Pullman’s population declined by nearly 7% in 2021, with a poverty
rate of 33.6%. This decline and high poverty rate highlight the urgency of addressing this
issue.
– By understanding the local context and collaborating with stakeholders, we can develop
effective strategies to alleviate poverty in Pullman.
