Prepare an essay to discuss opportunities and challenges regarding regional imbalances,
growth, employment and business development in ONE of the following selected EU countries:
France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and UK.
Your analysis should provide the following:
• An overview of socio-economic statistics and descriptive information to outline key
characteristics of your chosen country
• A discussion of the main competitive advantages and issues in terms of employment
and business development considering:
• Disparities/imbalances in economic development at the sub-national level;
And at least two of the following:
• Innovation and entrepreneurship
• Trade and Multinational enterprises’ investment (FDI)
• Labour mobility
• A discussion of the effectiveness as well as limitations of relevant EU policies to
support employment and business development, in line with the analysis and elements
considered in the previous point.
Use terminology and concepts from the module whenever appropriate. Theory should serve
the analysis and the two should be interlinked. Apply critical thinking when using
relevant theories and concepts from the module, highlighting and evaluating their
strengths and weaknesses in the context of your analysis.
The essay should be about 2500 words (+/- 10%).
A full bibliography is also required, and you can use a maximum of three tables or figures (in
any combination). [The bibliography and tables/figures are not included in the word count.]
I would suggest to select the country you are most interested in, but also choose considering
one that may allow you good opportunities to discuss theories and concepts covered. Also,
make sure that you may be able to get enough data and information for your selected country.
