Description: You are required to write a Literature Review on any aspect of tourism or hospitality
that interests you. Your literature review should be approximately 1500 words (not counting
references).
A literature review summarises, interprets, and critically evaluates existing literature (or published
material) in order to establish current knowledge of a subject. The purpose for doing so relates to
ongoing research to develop that knowledge: the literature review may resolve a controversy,
establish the need for additional research, and/or define a topic of inquiry. Your literature review
should illustrate that you understand what some of the key issues associated with your topic are,
research gaps involved with your topic, and may identify important issues or potential controversies
associated with the topic.
In addition to leaving you a better informed researcher in a particular aspect of tourism or
hospitality, writing a literature review will help you develop and demonstrate two valuable skills:
1. Research: the ability to scan the literature efficiently to identify a set of useful articles
and/or books and to obtain those materials.
2. Critical Evaluation: the ability to apply principles of analysis to identify unbiased and valid
studies.
