Task
You have been given the responsibility of designing and teaching an English language course for
two of the groups outlined below.
1. Discuss the kind of pre-course information you would need to help you in the planning
of the course and from whom you would find out the information.
2. Assess the possible methods you could use to acquire the information and decide on the
most appropriate.
3. Consider the Target Language Situation which the students are likely to encounter.
4. Prepare a provisional syllabus (course) outline based on 10 sessions (50 minutes per
session). The syllabus should contain brief details of the language items you would
expect to cover with reasons for your choices, the overall aims of the courses, how you
would assess the progress of the students and what methods you would use to assess
the success of the courses generally.
Groups
 A group of 10 postgraduate International Tourism Management students of mixed
nationality studying in an English-speaking environment. The students will follow the
English course alongside their academic studies. They have been referred to the course
due to previous low marks on assignments.
 A course for a closed group of 3 Arabic-speaking Civil Engineering academics who will be
presenting a joint paper at an international conference where English is the official
language. The focus of the course should be on oral presentation skills.
 A pre-departure course for a group of 14-15 year old high school students from France
preparing to come on a school exchange to the UK. They will be staying with British
families during their stay.
 A group of 10 teachers of English from high schools in your country who have been
selected to attend a week’s language development course at a British university. The
focus should be on developing their own oral fluency skills and using classroom language.
Their own language level is upper-intermediate.
 A group of six elementary level children (8-9 years of age) from your country who are
attending a summer holiday English language club. The focus should be on practicing
everyday language using ‘fun activities.’

In order to complete this assignment successfully, you will:
1. Write an essay of 2500 words applying curriculum design and ESP theories to two of the
scenarios outlined.
2. Demonstrate an understanding and critical evaluation of the techniques of needs analysis
construction.
3. Use grammatical and correctly spelled English and a suitable academic writing style.
5. Attach a reference list (not included in the word count) and provide in-text referencing, using
the Harvard system
