The essay questions test your ability critically to analyse the work of one
thinker examined in the first half of this module. The essay is, therefore, a
test of your ability to engage in depth with one of the philosophers we
have examined, with particular emphasis on interpreting their work and
critically analyzing their arguments.
Please pick one of the following question:
1. 1) What, if anything, is wrong with Plato’s vision of an ideal society?
2. 2) In what sense, if any, is it true that Rousseau considered
inequality to be the source of bad government?
3. 3) ‘Rousseau’s political thought has definite blindspots.’ DISCUSS WITH REFERENCE TO CLASS, OR RACE, OR GENDER.
4. 4) Did Marx think that capitalism is unjust?
5. 5) ‘Marxists have tended to overlook the significance of noneconomic forms of oppression.’ DISCUSS

The essay wordcount is 2,500 words. Please remember that the
wordcount is absolute, ie., the wordcount should not exceed 2,500. Essay
titles and the bibliography are not included in the word count. Headings
and sub-headings (excepting the essay title), in-text references, footnotes,
and the main text are all included in the word count. Submissions
exceeding the upper maximum word count will receive a 5% penalty..
Knowledge
This essay provides the opportunity to engage in-depth with one
philosopher that we have examined. It is therefore your opportunity to
demonstrate your understanding your chosen philosopher’s argument.
It is essential that you have engaged with the appropriate primary text
for the question that you have selected. Your understanding of the
argument will be demonstrated by how you quote and paraphrase the
text. It is important that you do not take quotes out of context or wilfully
distort the arguments presented. The intended meaning of the argument
will be clearer the more of the text that you have read.
With that in mind, it is important that you embed your argument in the
secondary literature. Secondary literature, however, should not be taken
as ‘evidence’ of (e.g.) Plato’s argument. Secondary texts are
interpretations of the primary text, and you are expected to assess the
strengths, weaknesses and plausibility of these interpretations. You
therefore need to engage with secondary literature in order to understand
the range of interpretations of a text and the debates surrounding the
primary texts. Having read a range of sources, contrast and critique the
differing interpretations of authors by comparing them to the primary text.
There is no ‘set’ number of sources that you should include in your essay.
Too few and you will not be able to demonstrate an in-depth, although too
many and you might not be able to engage with them in substance. You
should not force references in to pad out your bibliography and create the
illusion that you’ve read extensively; references should contribute
meaningfully to the essay.
Analysis
This essay also provides the opportunity for you to critically analyse
primary and secondary literature.
Analysis involves more than just ‘describing’ or ‘restating’ the argument
presented in the primary text. It is an opportunity to break up an argument
into its component parts and evaluate the plausibility, logicality or
correctness of the individual parts of the argument, and how these parts
piece together into a whole argument. You can also engage in analysis
through comparison or through normative judgement and evaluation if the
question deems it appropriate.
Style and Presentation
Structure
It is essential that you structure your essay in a manner that is clear and
easy for the marker to follow. It should not be a list of ‘pros and cons’
which you weigh up in the conclusion. You should take a stance from the
beginning and defend it throughout. Your answer to the question,
therefore, should be clear from the first paragraph. You should not aim for
a ‘big reveal’ in the conclusion.
The introduction should concisely summarise the central argument of your
essay and provide a road-map to follow through the rest of the essay. That
means you should provide one or two sentences stating the central thesis
(‘This essay will argue…’ or ‘In this essay I will argue…’), and a few more
explaining how you will defend that thesis.
When writing the body of the essay, the thesis should be a ‘thread’ that
holds the whole paper together. That means two things:
1. (1)
Itisessentialthateverythingthatyoudiscussshouldbelinkedbacktodefe
ndingthat central thesis. If it is not clearly linked to the central
thesis, you should consider either removing that section from the
essay, or rewriting it so that it does link to central argument more
clearly.
2. (2) The argument should build sequentially. Each part should
necessarily follow from what has been said in the previous sections.
While you are free to use subheading if you wish, they can
sometimes encourage you to write mini-essays of discrete, selfcontained arguments. If you do use subheadings to organise your
thoughts, make sure you do not lose sight of the over-arching
argument.
Signposting is crucial in an essay. Even at the risk of sounding laboured or
awkward, you should continually explain how each part fits into the
overarching argument. Don’t leave it for the marker to guess this!
Writing style
Clarity and concision of your arguments and explanations are essential.
Key terms should be defined appropriately. Avoid jargon and technical
language unless it helps advance your argument.
Proof-reading is crucial. Don’t drop unnecessary marks through spelling
and grammatical errors.
