The police agencies that were assigned to me are; Chatham-Kent, Calgary and Owen Sound, which is covered by the Ontario provincial police. I have chosen to do research on Chatham Kent and Calgary police services and not the OPP because I don’t want to potentially work all over the province I prefer a distinguished area so I can familiarize myself with my community. Being a part of your community is critical in this profession because it creates a trustworthy and safe environment. Despite certain places, such as Peel Region, being large, the community still believes in their police and has respect for them.Chatham-Kent is a small city in Southwestern Ontario. The last consensus, in 2014, shows that their population is steadily growing at .85% and currently sitting at 105,260 people. Chatham-Kent Ontario became a municipality in 1998. The city of Chatham-Kent is located on the Thames River east of Windsor. This city is surrounded by Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie. Chatham was originally supposed to be a military settlement. Sadly, their military function did not develop. Automotive manufacturing and other supporting industrial companies represent a massive area of cities economic activity. (Chatham-Kent Police Service. October 2018, para. 1). There are two college campuses, one in Chatham and one in Wallaceburg. The St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology is in Chatham, and Ridgetown College, which is affiliated with the University of Guelph, is in Wallaceburg. Chatham-Kent has two provincial parks named; Rondeau and Wheatley. Chatham-Kent police service was formed, September 1st, 1998, when 23 municipalities formed together to become one small city which is now called Chatham-Kent. CKPS divided up their patrol zones into 3 sections, based on population. CKPS has 4 police stations, 3 for the most populated cities in Chatham-Kent, and in the center of all 3 stations is the CKPS headquarters. There is one in Wallaceburg, another in Blenheim, the last one is in Tilbury, and the headquarters is located in Chatham. CKPS main mission is to make Chatham-Kent the safest community in Ontario. The CKPS also has a vision which is: in partnership with our citizens, we will serve and protect our community with integrity, fairness, and courage. They also have core values, which are; making a safe community where the protection of life and property are valued and preserved, being approachable and understanding of community needs and issues, being professional in our duty and committed to improving through lifelong learning, having a positive attitude in our dealings with each other and our communities, promoting teamwork within our service and with members of our communities to achieve our mutual goals, making use of diverse skills, abilities, roles and views. They are also; compassionate for all in need, honest in our interactions with each other and the members of our community, fair, equitable and impartial at all times, respectful to each other and to the people they protect and serve, dedicated to open communication within their organization and with their community. Recently in Chatham-Kent, there was a breaking and entering in the town Dresden, the thieves stole a lot of apple products worth $2000 and they stole another lump sum of jewelry. Additionally, a semi-automatic Ruger was taken from this family’s home. One week prior to this, a 1979 Ferrari was stolen overnight, which was valued at $100,000. Both crimes are currently unsolved. There have not been any major complaints found about the policing; therefore CKPS must be a very efficient and effective agency. It also shows that the communities they serve in are happy about the service they are getting, because civilians aren’t having any altercations with the police, nor has there been anything in the news.Calgary is a cosmopolitan city in Alberta with numerous tourists’ attractions and owes its rapid growth to its status as the center of Canada’s oil industry. Calgary has a population of 1.226 million as of 2014. The Calgary Police Force was created in 1885. In 1973, the force was renamed the Calgary Police Service, to reflect a more community-oriented focus. Calgary has eight police stations around the city. Calgary has a specific rank structure for all police officers that are inducted into the force. At the entry level, all successful applicants will start at the rank of constable. After approximately one year constables get promoted from class five up to one. This period is about one year for every class. After that, a constable’s next rank is senior constable level 1, and then level 2, after that is the rank of sergeant, and then the rank of staff sergeant and the last badge rank is a regimental sergeant major. The next rank is inspector which is a slip, then superintendent, after that is deputy chief and the last rank possible is chief. (CHAT News Today! 2nd November 2017, para. 1-4). Ranks after regimental sergeant major, resulting in the officer receiving a gold retirement badge instead of a silver one, which given to those who have not retired with the rank of inspector or higher. The Calgary police service has 6 core values, consisting of; Respect, Honesty, Integrity, Fairness, Compassion, and Courage. The CPS prides itself on service delivery, training and development and most importantly its people. In partnership with other agencies and the citizens of Calgary, the CPS strives to preserve the quality of life in the community by ensuring that Calgary remains a safe place to live, work, and visit. (Calgary.ca. October 2018, para. 1). Calgary has a mission to maximize public safety. Calgary Police Service is committed to working with the community to maintain this city as a safe place to live a satisfying life. Calgary police service has a business plan that is currently a work in progress. In 2012, Calgary identified two million dollars inefficiencies due to the Westwinds campus consolidation, airtime contract savings, reduced security service coverage in the Administration building, and retirement incentives for senior officers. Calgary believes to completely cancel out the 2012 inflationary increase; they also re-examined and changed their vehicle replacement schedule and reduced its contribution to the vehicle reserve. The Calgary police service reviews their operations in detail regularly for efficiency and effectiveness. Over the years, CPS has been able to achieve efficiency savings in numerous areas, which have been reinvested to further our operations within the existing budget funding. These savings, if achieved, would be reinvested in different policing operations. Additional funding was approved to keep up with a growing city and address pressures such as youth crime prevention, and increases in child abuse, elder abuse, and major fraud cases. (Calgary.ca. October 2018, para. 23-27). Recently in Calgary, at the beginning of October, there was an internal investigation that was not handled very well. It was concerning the conduct of how handled a case file concerning a hells angel member. The member was released because there were not any clear charges to put on the member because the police officers that arresting him did not take proper notes. The two police officer that arrested the accused did not take proper notes about the situation, were later charged with assault on behalf of the accused but both officers were acquitted of the charges, so no jail time was given. The argument is not whether the assault happened, but if the investigation was done transparently and fairly. The contestation right now is, because they are police officers they got off the hook, despite the chief of Calgary police saying there will be disciplinary actions, the public doesn’t agree that it will suffice any other citizen would not have gotten the same treatment. The Calgary police service seems to be a good agency. This problem has been the first one in a long time, therefore since the Calgary police are not consistently making errors they seem like a good agency. The citizens are not actively complaining or having strikes against the agency that serves their community, which probably means they are satisfied.If I had to choose between Chatham-Kent and CPS, I would choose Calgary police service. I would CPS because I like working for a bigger organization and I like being a part of a big family. Chatham-Kent is a small town with barely one-hundred thousand citizens. I prefer serving hundreds of thousands of people because I like making an impact on my community in different areas. I also like educating young adults in different aspects of crime and prevent others from committing future crimes. Although I could do that in Chatham-Kent, it is too small of a society for me to be consistently interested and learn certain aspects of the job that could only take place in a big city. Being hired in Calgary, they would be expecting a great deal from me being selected to serve the citizens of Calgary as a police officer. “Our members must have exemplary moral character, a high degree of personal integrity, display sound judgment, intelligent decision making, maturity, and common sense.” (Join.calgarypolice.ca. April 2018, para. 7). It is mandatory that I also apply, already having their six core values, which are, respect, honesty, integrity, fairness, compassion, and courage. CPS requires all of its police officers carry these traits on a regular basis because it is the foundation that makes a good Calgary police officer. There are minimum requirements to work for the CPS. Although having the minimum requirements permit you to apply it does not guarantee me a spot working for CPS. The minimum requirement is a grade 12 diploma or equivalent. I must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant status or permanent resident status (living in Canada or the United States for three years). I must also be at least 18 years of age. I must also possess a class 5 Driver’s license with no more than five demerit points. This is specific to the prairies but, the equivalent would be a G class license in Ontario. I have to meet medical/health and fitness standards. I cannot have any unpardoned criminal convictions, as well as no criminal charges pending before the courts. I cannot?         (2018). Calgary.ca.
