Chapters 5 & 6
Overview
Chapter 5 delves in to Problems of the city. Some of those problems are classified as White flight, the poor in the cities and rent control just to name a few. Chapter 6 discusses overcoming problems of the cities. This chapter goes into depth about creating resolutions for the problems in the city. Some resolutions include police involvement, neighborhood watch and combating gangs.
Key Concept from Chapter 5
In chapter 5 the key concepts I learned about problems in the city. Some problems include white flight where ”white and graying” residents flee the neighborhood from fear of other ethnic individuals bringing down the value of the Neiborhood (pg.151). The poor in the cities consist of persons living in poverty with income less than 21k a year per family of four (pg.154). Lastly Rent control it doesn’t seem to make sense because it reduces the supply of new housing (Pg.159).
Key Concept from Chapter 6
In chapter 6 the key concepts I learned about were Overcoming the problems of the cities. Police involvement including foot patrol, bike patrol, more officers on the street, and removing visible crime from the street. These factors have helped reduce crime. Also creating higher employment rates and a stronger economy (pg.179). Neighborhood watch cooperates with the police department on reporting crime to help reduce crime (pg.179). The last concept that I would I like to add is combating gangs. ATF developed a school-based gang prevention program to keep kids out of gangs (pg.180).
Key Concept from Chapter 5 or 6
Some of the last key concepts I learned about are Gentrification and Boomburgs. Gentrification is defined as the movement of young professionals to the central city (pg.167). Both higher and lower income families desire housing and the families with higher incomes take the units. Boomburg was a term made to describe fast growing suburbs.

I found chapters 5 and 6 to be very informative. They helped me to understand problems of our inner cities. Chapter 6 helped me understand how to overcome the problems of the cities. The information I learned helped me to gain knowledge on how to assist my clients when looking for a home. Blockbusting and steering are definitely not ethical. I will provide my future clients with listings in the neighborhood of their desire no matter what ethnicity resides there.
