DATA UNDERSTANDING
The following website (https://public.tableau.com/app/learn/sample-data) contains a list of data sources organized in different categories. Select one of the following datasets for your project.
Business
• Employment Changes in Great Britain by Industry. Employment data by industry for 2011 and 2014 by city for Great Britain. The 1-digit sheet has data aggregated at the industry level whereas the 2-digit sheet aggregates the data at the sub-industry level. Source: Economic Modeling Specialists Inc (EMSI)

Before making the selection, consider the following:

• Review each dataset to have a basic understating of the data. • Select a dataset that aligns with your major and career goals. The outcome of

this project could become a differentiator when looking for future job opportunities.

• Ask yourself the following questions: o Who will be the target audience of the data? o What questions can the data help answer?

• Note that some datasets have incomplete data. This might require some transformation on your part. You are not to modify the source file in any way. Any data transformation must be done in Tableau.

• This is an “Open-Ended” project, with no specific questions. As such, you need to define your assumptions for the project. These assumptions must be communicated properly as you develop your project.

PART 1. VISUALIZATIONS

Your job in this section will be to implement between 8 – 10 visualizations adapting the examples discussed in class. Some of these visualizations (between 2-4) must include LOD Expressions. (NOTE: You can either adapt an example from the “TOP 15 LOD Expressions” site, or found on another source).

For each visualization, you must answer the following questions (in the Caption area of each worksheet):

• What is the purpose of the viz? What question does the viz helps answer? • What default example are you using to implement your viz? If using an

example not found on the videos/blogs provided, include a link of the URL of the example source.

• How does your viz differs from the example you are using as a source? You have to make sure your viz differs in some considerable way.

PART 2. DEVELOPING A DASHBOARD

A dashboard is a collection of several views, letting you compare a variety of data simultaneously. For example, if you have a set of views that you review every day, you can create a dashboard that displays all the views at once, rather than navigate to separate worksheets.

Based on the visualizations created in the previous section, develop a dashboard that might provide a “one-stop analytical view” for your target audience (identified in previous steps). The dashboard should follow the best practices described in the blog “Best Practices for Effective Dashboards” (refer to Tableau resources in Canvas).

PART 3. DEVELOPING A STORY

A story in Tableau is a sequence of visualizations that work together to convey information. You can create stories to tell a data narrative, provide context, demonstrate how decisions relate to outcomes, or make a compelling case.

After reviewing the material and the data, come up with a question you would like to examine using visualizations, dashboards, and a story. Your job in this assignment will be to develop a compelling story that answers your question.

The minimum requirements for the story are:

• Before developing your story, carefully select the different story type(s) you plan to use to convey your message effectively (refer to the resources listed above for details).

• Between 10-15 story points (do not necessarily mean 10-15 different visualizations).

• Visualizations can be the same or similar to the ones developed in Part 1. • Your goal is to include in this assignment ALL of the concepts you have learned

throughout the semester. The more innovative you are, the higher the grade you will receive.

After completing your story, write a 1-2 page executive summary memo addressed to the target audience that summarizes the findings of your story. Also, include recommendations (when possible). You may include screenshots of your story if needed.

PART 4. PRESENTING YOUR STORY

Record a video that presents the story developed in the previous section. The basic requirements for this video are:

• Length: 5 -10 minutes max • Content(s): Go through the story and present the findings. Assume the video is

targeted to the appropriate manager. • Make sure that the video records your screen as well as your camera. Assume

that you are doing the presentation for a live audience.
