PART A
The individual coursework assignment requires you to:
1. Select TWO organisations, one from a country in one of the continents in list A and
the other from list B. They need to be different organisations, can be of any size and
can be in any sector at all (from private, public or charity sectors).
List A: Australia, Europe or North America
List B: Africa, Asia or South America
2. Provide a short introduction, outlining the chosen model or theory, nations and
organisations selected, as well as the two leaders (about 100 words)
3. Critically analyse one academic model and/or theory of leadership. Use high quality
journal articles (3 and 4 star mainly) and academic books to substantiate your ideas.
(about 900 words)
4. Critically analyse the applicability of the theory or model identified above in relation to
leadership in each organisation, giving evidence and examples to validate your
ideas. Discuss one leader from each organisation. Ensure that your argument is
balanced, as you consider both positive and negative aspects of leadership in each
company. (about 1900 words)
5. Conclude (about 100 words)
To consider in relation to your assignment PART A
Whilst not an exhaustive list, ask yourself whether you have:
Read the brief thoroughly. Ensure you answer the question effectively

provided evidence of wider reading. You should draw from a range of recent journal
articles and books when writing the assignment. All sources – ideas, models and materials –
that are not your own should be appropriately attributed. You may find yourself drawing
upon material gleaned from online sources. As with all material, this should be utilised
critically and referenced appropriately.

will be penalised.

provide supporting information
presented the assignment neatly. The preferred style is 12 point font size, line and a half
spacing, justified text and numbered pages.
PART A Wordcount: Total wordcount for Part A is MAXIMUM 3000 words, excluding cover
page, diagrams and bibliography. Do not exceed the wordcount as penalties will apply.
PART B (This replaces the group presentation. There is no longer
group assessment for this module.)
Background
A learning outcome of ULMS700 is to:
‘Recognise the business drivers for diversity, together with the significance of cross- cultural
influences on leadership when leading diverse teams.’
Part B Assignment
Reflect on your teamwork (actual and/or virtual) in all modules in your programme (M.Sc. HRM or
M.Sc. Occupational and Organisational Psychology). Write a reflective account of your own
teamwork experiences with respect to diversity, using two key examples (maximum 300 words).
Guidance for part B
1. Choose two examples of teamwork, when you have worked in diverse groups. Focus on crosscultural diversity and / or any of these types of diversity: gender, sexual orientation, age or
disability. It is fine to choose 2 cross-cultural examples or 2 from the different types of diversity
listed.
2
2. Use one of these two reflective models to guide your reflection: Gibbs (1988) or Moon (1999).
These are helpful guides to the Gibbs and Moon models:

https://efs.weblogs.anu.edu.au/files/2018/01/Moon-on-Reflective-Writing.pdf
3. Reflect on your 2 examples using the Gibbs or Moon approach.
4. Write a reflective account of your two chosen examples of working in diverse teams.
Consider your teamwork experiences in relation to diversity of team members, not
leadership of the team. What illuminating experiences did you have, which helped you to
appreciate the benefits of diversity? What challenges did you face, which made you consider
the difficulties of diverse teams? How have you learned and developed as a result of this?
How have you appreciated differences between people, as a result of teamwork?
NB Only one reference is needed – referencing Gibbs or Moon. No other theory or academic
references are needed. This is an exercise in personal reflection rather than using academic
theory.
