• The overall evaluation is a piece of reflective writing about your placement as a whole. It is not the story of the placement. Students are advised to return to their lecture notes from 21st October 2019 to refresh their understanding of the features of reflective writing.
• The overall evaluation should be 1500 words (+/- 10%) in length.
• Students are trying to convey what they learned about children and young people in their placement setting and about their own learning as a university student.
• Given the word count, students will have to be selective about the elements of placement they choose to write about. A student should select one key theme from their placement using the SHANARRI Indicators from GIRFEC (Safe, Healthy, Active, Nurtured, Achieving, Respected, Responsible and Included). Where a student undertakes more than one placement the theme can refer to information from one or both placements.
• Students should link their evaluation to on-campus learning, policies, journal articles, academic texts and research, as appropriate. (As this is a piece of academic work, using websites and/ or Bryce, Humes, Gillies and Kennedy alone will not be enough!) However, rather than trying to find expert literature that describes a specific condition that a child has, you should concentrate on effective strategies used to support children/ methods used to overcome barriers/ support provided so that children reach their potential etc.
• The final section of the evaluation should identify a major strength you developed as a result of this placement as well as identifying your development needs.
• The overall evaluation will be graded from 0 – 100% using the University Undergraduate Marking Guidelines.
