Objective
This assignment is designed to assist you to understand and apply financial
analysis concepts and techniques. The intention is to help you appreciate the
linkages between accounting and business practice as well as accounting and your
other modules.
Scenario
You are part of the accounting and finance department of an organisation operating
in the sports industry. Ahead of a key meeting with the senior management team,
the Managing Director has asked you to provide a detailed report of the financial
performance and position of the organisation, based on the last three years of
accounts.
In particular, the following report should focus on the organisation’s operating
performance and its main drivers including profitability, liquidity, capital
expenditure and financing (in as far as these are relevant to the organisation in the
three year period).
As experts in your field you know how important it is to take a wide-ranging and
forward-looking perspective when analysing accounting information. Therefore,
your analysis will be supplemented with industry and/or competitors’ information,
reference to broader economic trends, and any other information that you believe
to be relevant. Any limitations to and constraints on your analysis should also be
reported. Although ratio analysis is important, your report should demonstrate your
understanding of the important financial issues and the relationship between them.
Task
Working individually:
a) Prepare a PowerPoint presentation to provide an overview of the
financial performance and position of an organisation of your choice
operating in the sports industry focusing on profitability, liquidity, capital
expenditure and financing (in as far as these are relevant to the
organisation in the three year period);
b) Using the Notes field for each slide, prepare a written explanation and
conclusion of to your presentation.
This is expected to include the computation of appropriate financial ratios as well
as the use of additional information. For example: industry and/or competitors’
information, reference to broader economic trends etc.
You are permitted to prepare 6-10 slides. A copy of your PowerPoint presentation
should be submitted through the on-line submission point on the module Learn
page. Your submission will be checked within Turnitin to ensure that your work is
original.
