The results of a large scale survey conducted by BBC News Online suggest that more than half of British citizen thinks of the society as racist. Although the tolerance level of people has increased with the times’ racism is more common in the workplace – about one in three blacks and Asians complain of losing a job opportunity because of racism. Again, the opinion is corroborated by 52% whites and 53% blacks that that British society is racist.According to Gurbux Singh, chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), there is “mixed response” from the public on race, as he says, “Ethnic minority respondents were more likely to feel they were the victims of racial discrimination than whites, showing very clearly the differences in their experiences of living in Britain to the majority of the population”.According to the Institute of Criminal Policy Research (2004), racial incidents are recorded by the police. This has been a practice since 1986. The police definition of racism is quite broad, as they name any incident racist if the victim says so. It has been advocated by the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry as well. Statistics indicate that racism has been on the increase from 13,151 in 1996/97 to a high of 54,370 in 2001/02. The downward trend of an 11% decrease in racial incidents was noticed in the year 2002/2003, numbering 48,525 incidents. The British Crime Survey (BCS) statistics differ with police figures, as police reports represent a quarter of racially inspired incidents reported by BCS every year. Such incidents are inter-related to violence, harassment, and criminal damage.
