Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to reflect on what you’ve learned about the topic you
have been researching this semester, critical thinking, argumentation, and advocacy. This
assignment allows you the opportunity to share what lessons you are taking away from
COM 104 delivered in a video recorded oral presentation.
Task
Part 1 – Content of the presentation
The content of your presentation (aka what you will say during your presentation) will be
comprised of two sections. The first section will focus on your reflections of what you
learned from Unit 1 & 2. The second section asks you to select two advocacy strategies
that are covered in Unit 3 that you think best helps you advocate on your topic.
Section 1 – Reflection on the skills learned from Unit 1 & 2


Introduce the public argument topic that you’ve been researching. Explain a
few things that you learned about your topic, identify your position on the
topic, and summarize the opposing positions on the issue (approximately 45
seconds).
Reflect and describe how you applied your critical thinking skills to research,
analyze, and argue about your public argument topic. Relate this to challenges
you may or may not have experienced in being open-minded and/or fairminded. Make connections to course concepts that were discussed in the first
two units (approximately 45 seconds).
Section 2 – Application of advocacy strategies (Unit 3)
Select 2 of the advocacy strategies covered in Unit 3 that you think BEST helps you
advocate for social change on your public argument topic. You may now advocate for the
position that you fill most passionate about – which two strategies will help you
accomplish this? Explain your thought process for why you chose the two strategies and
address the following prompts for the corresponding two strategies
selected (approximately 45 seconds each / 90 seconds total):
Petition: either (1) create your own petition or (2) locate a petition that is advocating for
the same thing you are. The petition does not have to be circulated and signatures do not
need to be collected, rather think critically about how you would execute the petition.
Regardless if you make your own petition or find a petition, in your presentation address
the following:





The title of the petition.
Description or summary of the problem and what you would like to see as a
change.
Explain whether the petition will be digital or physical and the “places” you
would go (physical or digital) to collect signatures. Identify the target audience
of the petition, aka those you think would sign the petition.
Identify the organization or to whom you would submit the petition (eg. a local
governing body, Congress, an HOA, the UNLV President, etc.).
Include a picture of the petition in your visual aid.
Create a protest sign: create a physical or digital protest sign. Include the digital sign or a
picture of the physical sign in your visual aid.

Utilize your critical thinking skills when creating the poster. Explain and
describe the choices you made in the sign such as the slogan or phrase, use of
color, use of symbols, etc.
Develop a rally plan: pretend you are organizing a rally related to your topic. Create a
strategic plan for the event. In your presentation address the following:

a strategic plan for the event. In your presentation address the following:

Protest art: either (1) create a piece of protest art or (2) analyze a piece of protest art.
Protest art is very broad and can include things like painting/drawing, music and lyrics,
poems and spoken word, murals or graffiti, dance, music videos and other visual forms,
etc. In your presentation address the following:


Create a piece of protest art: include the piece of art in your visual aid.
o Summarize the inspiration behind the piece of art.
o Explain any symbolism or color used within the art and why it was
incorporated.
o Indicate what the art is objecting against or fighting for.
Analyze a piece of protest art:
o Interpret the art by explaining any symbolism or color used within
the art and why it was incorporated.
o Provide context to the art including who made it, when it was
created, and why it was created. Include any important details that
will help us understand how and why the art is advocating.
o Identify what the piece of art is trying to bring awareness to.
Create a social media post: develop a social media post for one specific social media
platform. You do not have to actually post this, rather imagine you are creating a post for
one platform. In your presentation address the following:





Identify the single platform you post to and why you chose the platform. (In
reality you may post to several platforms, the post will vary depending on the
platform used. Think strategically about how to tailor the message to single
platform chosen.)
Explain the target audience that you want the post to reach and why they are
the target audience.
Include the caption to the post and explain how you developed the caption.
Include picture(s) and/or visuals (depending on the platform chosen) and
interpret them.
Create 2 hashtags to accompany the post. Explain the hashtags.


Create a visual aid to display on your screen while you are recording the
presentation. You may use Google slides, PowerPoint, Canva, or any other type
of platform to create the visual aid. There must be 6 slides, 1 of which must be a
title slide. The visual aid does not need to be submitted, instead it must be
included in the recording of your video.

Should Euthanasia be Legalized?
Although I am strongly against the use of euthanasia, literature findings put forward
interesting findings on the need and benefits of euthanasia, which are worth investigating. The
issue of physician-assisted suicide has remained to be a hotly contested topic throughout history,
and it continues to challenge the work of scholars, with some advocating for use of lethal injection
for elderly patients that have little probability of regaining their healthy normal selves. Although
there is need to preserve life, literature findings point to some benefits of adopting euthanasia in
the clinical setting for some selected patients (Dugdale, Lerner, & Callahan, 2019). Although many
pro-life individuals have cited the negative impacts of euthanasia, findings by Dugdale, Lerner, &
Callahan (2019) reveal that euthanasia, if well managed could help in preserving personal dignity
and respect, eliminate pain and suffering, as well as eliminate excessive medical expenses.
The first benefit of euthanasia is its ability to preserve personal dignity and respect. Patients
in their end-of-life stage can be very dramatic and can show unanticipated behavior and utterances,
which can be silenced using euthanasia (Dugdale, Lerner, & Callahan, 2019). Considering that
elderly patient in their end-of-life stage usually suffer from mental health conditions, there is every
need to evaluate their behavior and after consulting with family members and the patient, if
possible, consider administering euthanasia to help prevent escalation of pain, suffering, and agony
that lead to patients acting out strangely. Euthanasia helps to prevent exposure of the patient to
family members in a manner that can defraud them of their dignity and respect (Weir, 2017). In
addition, once a patient has signed the consent form for euthanasia, there is need to respect their
autonomy and grant them their wishes. Patients that agree to euthanasia are usually tired of pain
and suffering and want to put an end to their mystery, and there is need to help them accomplish
their mission rather than deny them.
Another major benefit of euthanasia is elimination of suffering and pain (Dugdale, Lerner,
& Callahan, 2019). Euthanasia is a vital tool for patients that are in constant long-term pain and
suffering. Patients that endure excruciating pain for long periods definitely require a one-time
solution that would help them avoid pain. For those in their end-of-life stage, offering them
euthanasia is appropriate because they are already in their end-of-life stage and need a way out of
their misery and pain. Emanuel (1999) reveals that such excruciating pain is haunting to the patient
and identifying means of ending such pain and suffering can help patients prevent excessive pain
and suffering. In addition, pain and agony at the end-of-life stage can be dramatic and without
honor due to incapacitation and lack of energy in the body. Allowing euthanasia helps to preserve
the respect and human dignity of such patients.
Another major reason why euthanasia can be legalized is because it helps to eliminate
expensive medical expenses (Emanuel, 1999). Elderly patients in their end-of-life stage can suffer
multiple health conditions, which require expensive medical procedures and operations. Once a
patient has consented to use of euthanasia, tying them to the routine medical procedures and
operations is a waste of resources and finances. This is because maintaining a patient’s life in their
end-of-life stage is usually expensive and consumes many resources that can be shared with other
patients (Weir, 2017). The best example of this is that operating oxygen support equipment is one
of the most expensive medical procedures in the clinical setting. Most elderly patients might
require this equipment when incapacitated and unable to do most things on their own. This can
lead to millions and millions of medical expense debt if the patient is kept on the machine for
longer periods of more than six months. Such medical procedures and operations are a waste of
resources, which can be shared with other patients.
In summary, it is clear that euthanasia can be used ethically and in accordance with the law
guidelines to offer value to patients and society members in general. Euthanasia should be
legalized because it helps to prevent suffering and agony associated with prolonged pain for the
aged, it prevents loss of dignity and respect among family members and community members and
helps to save resources and finances that could be used on patients in their end-of-life stage.
