MODULE DESCRIPTION
The aim of this module is to examine the importance of cinematic production outside of
the Hollywood mainstream. Building on the critical framework established in The Moving
Image I it will further develop your understanding of the critical perspectives used in the
analysis of moving image work. Through a number of case studies you will interrogate
the relationship between cinematic production, politics, society, culture, and national
identity. You will explore the way in which national cinemas can both rely on the codes
and conventions established by Hollywood, as well as the degree to which they reject
these codes in favour of more culturally specific forms of cinema.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
● Produce a reading of a national cinema, drawing on textual analysis,
theoretical perspectives and appropriate reading.
● Utilise textual analysis to discuss the production of meaning in moving image
work.
● Locate the significance of World Cinema in relation to your own practice.
INDICATIVE CONTENT/AREAS OF STUDY
After establishing what is understood by ‘mainstream’ cinema, the module will engage
with a number of national cinemas and film movements that exist in opposition to this
model. Utilising a number of case studies, the module will introduce you to, amongst
other things, the notion of cultural specificity in Korean cinema, Primitive Modes of
Representation in Dogme 95, politics and surrealism in Czech cinema, Mythic construction
of the Nation in recent New Zealand cinema, and the issue of Masculinity in Crisis in
Brazilian film.
Formative
In preparing for CW2 (see below) you will be expected to produce a 500-word
essay plan and literature search to be discussed with your module tutor
BEFORE proceeding to write the summative piece. Feedback will thus be given
to help develop critical skills and check on correct referencing and structure.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION is 4.00pm Friday 3rd April. Please be
aware that if you do not submit your essay plan on time your work for
CW2 will NOT be accepted for marking.
